How To Set Up Audio Playback Preferences In iTunes – Fix iTunes

How To Set Audio Playback Preferences In iTunes

iTunes is the most recognized music player application on a computer. And with the popularity of the iPod, iPad and of course the iPhone it’s the most popular music player program and on most computers today. But how best to use iTunes to listen to music? Well iTunes has tons of different listening features. Once you work through some of the awesome listening features in iTunes you will be able to configure iTunes to fit it’s preferences to your liking. It’s pretty easy to set up and use iTunes and once you get an idea of how iTunes works you can change preferences around and come back to them pretty easily to change back or to remove.

How To Best Set Up Audio Playback Preferences In iTunes

The best way to set up some iTunes playback features is to launch the iTunes preferences on your computer. On a Windows computer you go to Edit, Preferences. On an Apple Macintosh computer you go to iTunes, Preferences (see pictures below – click to enlarge).

Click the Playback tab (see picture below – click to enlarge).

Here you can configure some of the fun and important playback features that’s built into your iTunes program.

Crossfade:

I prefer to select Crossfade songs because I like my music to flow with a dissolve between songs, kind of like how a DJ would be mixing music but not that elaborate. It basically eliminates the gaps or silence between the two songs smoothly. You can select the amount of Crossfade you want from 1 – 12. I prefer to move the slider all the way to 12 to get the most out of the Crossfade feature. If the slider is to the right then your music will overlap more and you’ll notice when a song is finishing or fading out and the next song will start fading up and you’ll hear both tracks together briefly until the previous song finishes and the next track is all the way up. If the slider is to the left your music will fade out much faster. So select the Crossfade Songs tab if you like this feature and you want your songs to flow from one to another without any breaks in between. You can always turn this feature off if it gets annoying but I’m sure once you discover this feature and hear what it does to your music you will love it. It’s perfect during parties or dinners with friends or just for listening to music on your own as your music will be non-stop. Also don’t worry if you’re playing CDs directly in your iTunes or playing MP3s or audio files form a CD-R or DVD-R in your iTunes the Crossfade feature won’t effect that music but only the music imported into your iTunes music library.

Sound Enhancer:

I also prefer to select Sound Enhancer because it really does boost up the sound of your music. This is especially great for older recordings/CDs that you might have imported because those usually sound very FLAT. Well the Sound Enhancer feature should help those FLAT songs and boost up or enhances the sound of those FLAT songs and make them sound more alive! Same as the Crossfade you can control the amount of Sound Enhancer you want but I select to go all the way up to the 12. I like my music to sound as best as it could so I make sure my Sound Enhancer is boosted up all the way! If you think your music is not sounding as good then just uncheck the Sound Enhancer button or lower it by sliding the slider to the amount you want.

Sound Check:

Now this is where it gets most important. Always make sure you have Sound Check checked/selected so that all your music sounds level. If Sound Check is not selected or checked then when you play songs in playlists, you know songs from one CD that was released in 2011 and one from 1979 then those songs will sound off. One song will be louder the other lower. When Sound Check is selected then iTunes will make sure to level those songs and get as close to output the sound as close as possible. Basically iTunes selects a master audio level and makes sure all your music is output at that same master level. So you don’t keep lowering the volume here and increasing the volume there. It’s very important that Sound Check is selected or checked.

Once you have done all of the above then you are ready to hit save to save your changes in the Playback Preferences so you can enjoy your music with the changes you set up in your iTunes Playback Preferences.

What You Can Do With iTunes

Apple’s iTunes program is a music and media library/media (music, movies, videos, podcasts, books, apps) management/organizer program and not only works on the Apple Macintosh computer system but also on Windows computers. iTunes allows you to manage your entire CD and music collection allowing you to import all your CDs or digital music files, create playlists, listen to music and sync your music to your iDevices such as iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch or more.

Without a doubt Apple’s iTunes along with the iPod and iPhone, has transformed the way we buy and listen to music today. Most of you are familiar with iTunes but a few of you might not be familiar with iTunes yet or some of you might need a bit more info about what iTunes can do then read on as you will find out how iTunes can change the way you buy and listen to music from now on.

iTunes comes with any Apple Macintosh computer you would have purchased or can also be downloaded or updated on any of your Apple Macintosh Computers from here. iTunes can also be downloaded and installed on any Windows computers from here.

Hands down Apple’s iTunes along with the iPod and iPhone are the best thing to happen to music since the first days of recording and putting music on a physical device to listen to. iTunes allows you do things with your music that you only would have fantasized about doing with them 15 or 20 years ago and we’re not just talking about you popping a CD in and playing it and listening to the songs on the CD. iTunes does a whole lot more than just playing the music off your CDs.

What Can You Do With iTunes?

There are a ton of things you can do with iTunes but we’ll certainly only cover music here but we might mention video or other uses for iTunes here and there but mostly this article is about using iTunes to listen and organize music.

- Listen to CDs while playing in iTunes

- Import CDs as MP3s, AACs, Apple Lossless, AIFs or WAVs (for more info about file formats read this article)

- Store the imported music in iTunes so you don’t have to deal with stacks of CDs ever again

- Backup all the imported CDs and music as DATA DVDs for safekeeping

- Search for your favorite music (artists, albums, compilations, greatest hits, singles) and organize your music so you keep going back to your favorite songs to hear

- Create playlists of your favorite songs/music which include your favorite songs or all songs from your favorite bands or all songs within a theme

- Create custom playlists of your favorite artists, genres, songs released in a specific year or by rating so you can come back to those songs easily and listen to them over and over again

- Sync your favorite songs, playlists, smart playlists, artists, albums or genres to your iPhone, iPod or iPad and take it with you

- Create CD length playlists and burn CDs of those mixes for friends, family or take with you for your car or trip

- Turn on Sharing and share your entire library over a network or share a specific playlist/playlists with folks on the same network

- Crossfade Songs so your iTunes music flows seamlessly from one to another. Like your own personal music DJ (see picture below)

- Use the equalizer in iTunes to boost your audio sound output quality to your liking (see picture below)

- Purchase and download music from the iTunes Music Store

- Download and listen to free Podcasts available at the iTunes Store or elsewhere

- Stream 100s of free Radio Stations playing the coolest new and classic music

- Stream your iTunes music library with Apple TV to enjoy your music

- Create ringtones of your favorite music for your iPhone or other other smartphone or cell phone

So that’s a pretty good start with what you can do with iTunes but there are certainly more things that you can do with iTunes. With so much to do it’s time to import all your music into iTunes if you haven’t yet and finally enjoy all your music digitally anywhere at anytime. Best part about it is when you have all your CDs or any music that was in your music collection imported into iTunes you’ll never have to pull the CDs out again all you do is launch your iTunes, type the name of the band, album or any keyword related to your music and your options will show up and you can be on your way to enjoying your music quickly and efficiently. Put all those CDs in storage and leave them there!!

Also make sure you back up your entire iTunes music library in case you have a computer crash or anything happen to the music on your hard drive and if anything does happen to your music on your computer and you lose your music files then you will have the backup to pull from and you don’t have to reimport all those CDs again one by one. Backup the music on DVD-R’s so you can store 4.2GB of music which usually is approximately 6 CDs.

So that is it. Look for more articles in the future about iTunes and how to best manage your iTunes to enjoy your music as best as possible. Enjoy your iTunes!!

Installing And Setting Up iTunes On A Windows PC

If you are on a Mac computer most likely you have iTunes installed but Windows computers do not come with iTunes installed.

First thing on a Windows machine is that you have to make sure you are logged into your computer as an administrator login. All applications or programs should be quit or not running. So nothing should be running during our install of the iTunes software. The best music player on a computer, hand down.

1. Go to www.apple.com/itunes and click on the Free Download with arrow pointing down button (see picture below – click to enlarge) so you can start your download process. You will have to enter your email address to actually have the download start but it’s pretty simple. Just follow the instructions on downloading iTunes – you are looking for iTunesSetup.exe file. You must pick the hard drive location where your iTunesSetup.exe file is downloading and make sure you remember where it’s downloading.

2. Next you should run the iTunesSetup.exe file that was downloaded. This is what’s going to install your iTunes on your Windows computer. Once you see the welcome screen just click through to the agreement that you you have to digitally sign. This is typical of all software you download it’s the same legal mumbo jumbo so just click through and make sure to accept it because if you do not accept this you will not be able to finish installing iTunes on your Windows computer.

3. After you have accepted the license agreement with Apple you will have to choose your installation options. Those installation options are as follows.

Installation Option 1:

Add iTunes and QuickTime Shortcuts To My Desktop. This basically installs the shortcuts for iTunes music player and QuickTime Player on your Windows computers desktop so that you can simply find the applications rather than dig for them.

Installation Option 2:

Use iTunes as the Default Player for Audio Files. This is important and I highly recommend that you set iTunes as your default music and audio file player. It’s the most popular player of it’s kind out there and I highly recommend you stick to one player. If you are happy with the player you currently use then by all means stick to it but if you don’t want any confusion or complications to arise then stick to one and if you need to use iTunes then stick to iTunes as your one and only music player. Trust me you’ll appreciate that you did that.

Installation Option 3:

Automatically update iTunes and other Apple software. I suggest you select this so that your computer updates your iTunes music player automatically so when there is a new update then you have the latest version of iTunes. It’s always good to have the latest and greatest version of any software program to be able to do what the latest things the software is doing.

4. Choosing the default language of the iTunes library. It’s defaulted to English but you are ok to choose any of the other available languages. One simple click on the drop down menu and you should be able to select what you want to use as the language.

5. You should now choose the destination folder for your brand new installed iTunes music player program. It’s defaulted to the Program Files folder on your C drive but if you wanted to use another folder just select the Change button to use to locate the desired destination folder.

6. Finally click Install to finish the installation process for installing your iTunes on your Windows computer. Once finished you will see the Completed dialog box on your desktop.

Finally iTunes along with QuickTime are both freshly installed on your Windows PC. You can start using iTunes by double clicking the iTunes on your desktop with the shortcut that we set up earlier. You can also just click the Start menu to locate iTunes and launch it.

I know this is repetitive but Apple has you agree to these agreements so once you launch iTunes for the first time you will have to agree to the license agreement again but once you do you are on your way to enjoy listening to music on your new iTunes music player/library program. But prior to that you have one more step and that is the iTunes Set Up assistant and just click through, Next button and really you will be on your way to enjoying the best music player around. Don’t have too much fun!!

How To Set-Up And Use iTunes Match

Week after week after week of waiting, anticipating, iTunes Match has finally arrived! Apple finally unveiled iTunes Match the other day and all I can say is that it’s amazing! For only $25 bucks a year, iTunes Match will allow you to just access a complete copy of your entire iTunes music library, which they store on their cloud, the iCloud! You can simply subscribe to iTunes Match, set it up very easily and take it for a ride. It’s pretty darn amazing so just be patient while it’s doing it’s thing. Because once finished you will be enjoying your entire music library, all the CDs you imported into iTunes, all the music you downloaded from the internet, all the music your friends gave you, all the mix CDs that you were given by family, friends etc will be available on the go anytime on the iCloud just for a measly 25 dollars for a year. Imagine you are in a hotel and all you have is your iPad so connect and start listening to your favorite Lady Gaga song!

You have to first check to make sure you are running the latest version of the iTunes software program. This is very easy and since I’m on a Mac computer I’ll start with that first. So on a Mac simply go to iTunes-About iTunes and you can see which version of iTunes you have. In this case I have 5.0 (see pictures – click to enlarge) and will need to upgrade to iTunes version 10.5.1.

If it’s not the latest version 10.5.1 then you will need to upgrade by simply going to iTunes-Check For Updates where you can download the latest version of iTunes in this case version 10.5.1. There’s another way to check to see which version of iTunes you are running but this way you can also check to see every software update you need to make. On a windows machine or PC you need to access the About iTunes and Check for Updates menu options by going to the Help menu and from here you can check to see if it’s running the latest version of iTunes which allows you to access the iTunes Match Service on the iCloud.

Once your iTunes software is upgraded to iTunes 10.5.1, you are able to see iTunes Match finally listed just under the iTunes Store on the left where all your playlists live. Just click on iTunes Match and then just click the blue subscribe button, it says Subscribe for $24.99. Once you click this button iTunes will start scanning your entire music library before doing anything else. It needs to check all the songs prior to trying to match any of them against the iTunes Store and iCloud. Finally once the scanning process is over it will match all of your songs. For those obscure songs that are not available at the iTunes Store for it to match and you know we have those obscure songs that have never seen the light of day of a release it will upload those songs to your space on the iCloud. It will also upload the artwork if the artwork is available.

Unfortunately my entire main iTunes music library is way, way too large for iTunes Match to work. I have almost 170,000 songs/tracks loaded up so it gave me an error message. But luckily I have a much smaller library on my laptop that I had match and from the 4506 tracks in my iTunes library it found 4358 of the songs and leaving just about 150 songs that I had to upload.

Once it has completely gone through matching your songs and finished it’s time to get access to your uploaded music now through the iCloud. Finally this is the fun part. You can have access to your music on another computer in the house or elsewhere or any iOS device such as the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch or Apple TV. Having access to your entire music library on the iCloud is so darn cool and to be able to get it on any iOS device or any computer is even more amazing. You will be able to share your iTunes library on the iCloud with 10 total computers/iOS devices. Now this is pretty darn cool because I can have it on my iPhone, iPad, laptop and the Apple TV.

How To Add iOS Devices Like The iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch To iTunes Match

When you are ready to finally connect one of your iOS devices like your iPhone or iPad then you simply go to your Settings on the iOS device of your choice. Click Settings then Music then switch iTunes Match to say On as it would be on the Off first time. It will ask you for a password or it might not. It didn’t ask me for a password on my iPhone but it did ask me to put my Apple ID password in for my iPad. Something to remember here is that iTunes Match is going to replace all the music you currently have on your iPhone or iPad or your iPod Touch. Keep in mind to sync your iOS device prior to turning on iTunes Match and replacing it with your music currently on your iOS device. Because if you had purchased music form the iTunes Store on your iOS device and didn’t sync you would lose the music.

Immediately after you have enabled iTunes Match on your iOS device like the iPhone, Show All Music pops up just below where you indicated to turn on iTunes Match on the iOS device in Settings – Menu. When you turn on Show All Music all of those songs that were matched and or uploaded from your iTunes music library to the iCloud will now show up in your iPod app on your iOS device. If Show All Music is off then you will only see the music you’ve downloaded. You are finally able to listen to the music on your iOS device using the iTunes Match service. When playing music you are really not streaming this music but you are literally downloading the music from the iCloud to your iOS device to listen to the music. The best part is that it’s playing the music as it’s downloading the music. You don’t have to wait until it’s downloaded completely. It’s like YouTube in a way!

When you have Show All Music on you will be able to see your whole entire iTunes music library. At least in my case my mini iTunes library on my laptop and not my entire huge library that was too huge for iTunes Match. Every one of the tracks you have on your iPhone’s music player will have a cloud arrow pointing down icon that you will have to click on to download the music. See picture below (click to enlarge).

I was just clicking through as many as I could when I first launched it and it started downloading the files one by one. Once you click it displays a circular icon that shows the download progress with a dark grayish circle going around the icon. At the end of a playlist you will also see a Download All cloud icon with arrow to be able to download the large group of files if you prefer to do it that way.

How To Add A Computer To iTunes Match

If you want to listen to the music on a different computer that your normal iTunes library is on you can add it. You have to make sure the computer is running the latest iTunes that can access iTunes Match and that is currently 10.5.1. You have to sign into your Apple user account and just click on the iTunes Match on the left column. When you login you will be asked to add the computer you are logging into your Apple account from. Just click and add the computer and iTunes will do the same thing it did with your first computer just make sure you are doing two computers at once if you happened to have another computer on hand that you wanted to do this with again. When the set up process finishes on your second computer you will be given access to all of the music you already did match off of your first computer. This is really cool because any iOS devices and other computer that you give access to iTunes Match will allow you to listen to the music from this iTunes. This time in the iTunes you’ll see that cloud with the arrow pointing down icon that are to all the songs in the iCloud. You can click each to download it but unfortunately this time in iTunes it’s not playing and downloading like the exacmple of YouTube I mentioned. It has to be fully downloaded and then you can play the song.

So that’s the process in setting up iTunes Match. It’s not much of a headache to do this all you need is time. I suggest you do it just before you leave somewhere so iTunes Match is going through your songs and you are not waiting around. Or you can simply set it up just before you are going to bed so that you wont need to listen to music and all that good stuff. The other hassle is iTunes Match not able to find songs to match so it has to upload physically from your own iTunes library.

A Simple Way to Create A Playlist In Your iTunes

A Simple Way to Create a Playlist In Your iTunes

The idea of creating a group of songs started when music was first introduced. It also started with mixtapes which most of the older folks that lived through the 70s, 80s and early 90s are aware of. CDs also existed after mixtapes which is a newer version of grouped songs. When the Internet was introduced to the public, playlists became a big hit to music lovers. iTunes is one of the most popular playlists creators today and it is used by hundreds of thousands of folks worldwide. Actually, there are many more features in iTunes aside from creating custom playlist mixes. You can burn CDs and make mix CDs such as Christmas mixes during the holidays, synchronize multiple iPods/iPhones and iPads on a single computer and take them along with you to your next party, provide you with a whole new experience in song combinations and help optimize the storage space of devices that has low capacity.

Creating a playlist in iTunes is not a complicated thing to do as long as you know how to use iTunes then you will have a very easy time in creating playlists. To start off, you will have to launch your iTunes music library on your computer and look for the + icon. It is located on the bottom left of the window. See the picture below.

After that, a new playlist will appear on the left side. This new playlist does not have a name yet and it does not contain any songs or tracks from your iTunes music library. But you can start adding songs from your library in a bit. Here are the next things that you should do to finish creating a playlist with your favorite songs.

First, name your playlist. Double click the name and start typing your desired new playlist name. After that, simply click enter and the name of the playlist will be changed. If you forgot to put a name on it, the playlist will simply be named Untitled Playlist. If you are not convinced on the name that you came up with, you can still change it later as these names are not permanent. Double click the name again and put the new name that you want. When you first clicked on the plus sign you will see that you can alter the Untitled Playlist name to your desired playlist name immediately.

Second, you now have to add songs to your playlist. After naming your playlist, the next step will be to add songs. Adding songs is as simply as dragging and dropping items on your playlist. You do not have to click a lot of buttons just to add a single song. What I would do is to double click on the new playlist that you created and make your playlist window free standing. See image below.

Click on the Music tab located at the upper left hand of the playlist.

You can find songs there that you can place on your playlist. After you find the songs that you want, just click the song and drag it to you playlist. When you see that the playlist has turned blue, just let go of your mouse and the song will automatically be added. Just repeat the process until you finish getting the songs that you want in your new playlist and the desired mix of songs has been completed.

Third, rearrange and order all the songs depending on your preference of where each song or track should be. So this is the final step, is to order the songs that you have in your playlist. You can arrange the songs in any order that you want. If you want to rearrange the songs, click the song and drag it up or down the playlist so that you can drop it either before a preferred song or after a preferred song.

Fourth is listening to the songs that you have. If you want to listen to the songs that you have on your playlist, simply double click on the first song or you can also click it and press play on the top left corner of the window so that you can listen to the first song. If you want to play the songs in a random order, you can shuffle the songs on the playlist by clicking the shuffle button. After clicking it, the songs will play on a random manner.

So this is it. Very simple way to create a playlist in your iTunes music library. If you want to get your iTunes fixed and cleaned up. Check out RealNetworks Rinse program below.

If you remove all those duplicates in your iTunes music library then you will open up room for more songs right? The only reason you have so many duplicate songs is because you probably imported your music twice or three times or more accidentally. Another reason is because you might have one song on one album by an artist also another one off of their greatest hits album, the same song on a soundtrack, a compilation or a single. So if you add that up that’s one song 5 times taking up precious space that could be used by brand new music. Best thing is to Fix Your iTunes song library with RealNetworks Rinse and remove those duplicate songs automatically!

RealNetworks Rinse adds beautiful album cover artwork automatically to your songs missing the album covers. Most of your music is probably missing the beautiful album cover artwork that normally should come with your music and rather than having artwork that looks like a grey music note in iTunes you should have the actual album cover artwork. The reason you have grey music notes is because your iTunes does not recognize the music. Automatically fix this and add album cover artwork automatically. Never do it by hand!

RealNetworks Rinse adds missing song information, details like album name, artist name and more all automatically. This is quite amazing because when you import songs into your iTunes song library without the actual names of the artists, album names, genres and more then how will you ever find those songs when you search for them?

RealNetworks Rinse fixes misspelled music information automatically (see before and after pictures above). This is cool because if a song is misspelled then how will you find that song in your iTunes music library when you search for it? Automate this fixing process and let RealNetworks Rinse scan through your iTunes music library and let it find and fix the misspelled songs. Then your songs will be correctly named and you’ll be able to find the songs when you search for them.

Fix iTunes Music Library

Fix iTunes Music Library

I have all my albums imported into my iTunes song library but all the music is messed up and disorganized. It’s a complete mess! If you have your music imported into iTunes then you most likely have an unorganized iTunes music library as well. Some of the problems that you might be dealing with in iTunes are duplicate songs, missing album cover artwork, missing song details and information and misspelled songs. All of these problems can cause a headache when you’re searching, organizing and listening to music. It’s even more of a problem when you sync your music to your iPod or iPhone.

I did a thorough search online to see if I can find an automated tool to fix these problems because if I was going to embark on this adventure to fix these problems by hand it was going to take a really long time. I mean a really long time to fix those problems by hand. I need to automate those fixes so that I can do something different. So I can set up to fix problems in my iTunes while I’m at work or at sleep or something.

One of the things I really hate is not having album cover artwork on my music. It’s already bad enough that we’re not physically holding the music anymore so I at least want to see what I’m listening to and it’s not a grey music note that I’m listening to which is what your imported music will look like on your iTunes and iPhone and iPod. This powerful program will find those beautiful album covers and add them to your music so you can enjoy the accompanying album artwork while you listen to the music on your iTunes, iPod, iPhone or Apple TV or other digital player device.

Another annoying problem in my iTunes is that I have tons of duplicate songs. Being the music fan that I am I bought every single album, greatest hits, singles and more from so many different artists and bands. So when I imported them all into my iTunes I had loads of duplicates. Then there are those greatest hits albums, soundtracks and compilations that I imported into my iTunes which on some of my favorite bands I have 6 of some of the songs. Now that’s too many. I only need one Enjoy The Silence mp3 by Depeche Mode not 6 from 6 different CDs. That’s 5 too many! And 5 additional copies of those mp3s is about 50 extra megabytes that’s taking up space on my computer hard drive. Now multiply that with hundreds of songs then I have gigabytes of duplicates to remove. This gets even more annoying when I sync up my Depeche Mode smart album I get all those extras and duplicates on my iPod taking up space. When I’m listening to that playlist I’ll get two or three of the same songs come up after each other. This program fixes duplicates for you automatically. It can either set them aside for you to check and put away or automatically just remove them from your iTunes music library and free up space on your iTunes and iPod and iPhone for more music. What’s even better about this powerful program is that it removes the lowest quality files and keeps the higher quality versions of your duplicates in your iTunes!
